First Cut

I'm feeling much better with this rose than with the Sweet Pepperbush. (I am a bit sad letting it go but there is always next year.) A few large petals can work for me. Here's an experiment with color--Permanent Rose for a base; Permanent Alizarin Crimson for the shadows; Cadmiun Orange as a light wash to tone everything towards salmon.

Next up is some serious sketch work to pull everything into alignment and correct some details. After that, I can transfer and paint to my heart's content! :-)

  1. Wow! Texture and observation of perspective luscious as ever.

Interesting how the dark outline preserves the 'drawn' feeling even while the topmost petal is trembling into life. Reminds me of the M. C. Escher pictures in which an immaculate graphite drawing, itself drawn on a drawn piece of paper, abruptly leaps off the page and becomes real lizards or hands.

I really like the place near the base of the flower where the cadmium orange comes through slightly stronger and contrasts with the pale reflected light along the frond of curled-back petal.

  2. Thanks Katharine! :-)

I'm getting a real thrill out of that orange glaze. Tonight I try neutrals for shadowing.
