A Couple of Birds With Color

Well, I'm not sure here... The colors seemed so disassociated that I threw an ochre (gotta love that earth pigment!) wash over the greens and the background. That seemed to help a bit.

What I do like about it is that it got me thinking about color mixing and palettes and value. Not sure right now where it will lead. I'll sleep on it.

  2. Oh thank you, Gretchen! I needed that. :-) I felt this piece was such a dud...

The only thing I'm not sure about with the birds is the combination of heavy colours in the birds' bodies for both the background area and the little round feather 'dots'. It pulls the eye into those areas preferentially.

But I love the relationship between the yellows, greens and browns, and the little cluster of colour between the birds' beaks. The birds definitely come to life with the colour added.

Turtle doves! :-) yes ... stylised birds and animals seem very hard to identify with any certainty in the Celtic mss!

  4. Yes, I do see what you mean about the dark tonal values in all the colors! :-)

I got the impression as I started filling in the colors that the birds were eating berries and that those berries were represented in their bellies. These critters do leave room for interpretation, don't they?
