Rhododendron Leaf

My pencil exercises inspired me to try something botanical so I snipped a bit of rhododendron. The paper is not my usual Stonehenge and rather on the rough side; next time I'll use my favorite.

I oftentimes seem to lay on a lot of pencil, trying to build the entire form. Here I thought I'd leave out mass and detail. I like the result, how just a bit of shadow can provide enough clues for form.

  1. Hey thanks, Mike!

You may have heard--MA is in for another April Fool's Day Northeaster. Forecasts call for most snow west of Bridgewater.

  3. This leaf looks like you could just pick it up off of the paper; you have captured a real sense of curvature; well done!
According to the local weather guys, the higher elevations ( that would be me ) could see OVER a foot of snow.... sigh!

  4. I really like this one too-its all about the suggestion of leaf, the essence of leaf. Lovely.
Bad news about the snow...I think I would be climbing the walls by now.

  5. Thanks, Gretchen! I thought of you when I saw the weather map--looks like you are right in the thick of it. There is a mix of ran and snow falling right now but the snow is not sticking. Take care and good luck!

  6. Thank you, Judith! Ya, this has indeed been a winter with cabin fever. We have not yet experienced much in the way of springlike weather and now this. Bridgewater should fare well this time. During the Great April Fool's Storm of 1997, there was nearly two feet of heavy, wet snow. I lost power for exactly one week--no need to reset the electric clock!
