Swamp Dogwood

Pictures of this species have been about since before Joe-Pye. After heading out yesterday and once again shooting these nearly iridescent blue pearls, and with continuing frustration with goldenrod species (Yipes, I picked up another new one today!), I felt determined to make this ID! :-) So here goes... I think this is Swamp Dogwood, Cornus foemina. The documentation on this species is sparse and there are indications that C. foemina is a more southerly species but it feels like the best fit.

  1. If this is indeed swamp dogwood, you may have solved a mystery for me; while visiting my in-laws 4 years ago in CT, I spied a bush with berries quite like this. It was Thanksgiving, obviously much later in the season than you have photo'd here, and all the foliage had either dropped or was brown and brittle- but these berries were so beautiful- I had never seen anything to equal them. I photo'd them and have been trying to ID them ever since. My berries had tiny speckles on them when viewed closely. I finally came to the conclusion that maybe it was an exotic species that had escaped someone's landscaped property but now you have given me new hope. I will further investigate on my own, now that I at least have a clue! thanks!

  2. I just began my google search and.... did you know that this blog post/nuncketest is already listed (about 1/3 down the google page-at least on my screen anyway) as a source of info re: swamp dogwood? COOL!

  3. I went out this evening to gather more evidence on this identification. See tomorrow for an exciting sequel!

These are the loveliest berries, aren't they? Some are intensely metallic, others are mottled with white.

I see what you mean about Google. That does seem fast, doesn't it?
