Water Lily

Today I mixed Viridian and Alizarin Crimson pigment pastes and used them for glazes. Later I made my own transfer paper, painting a mix of denatured alcohol and yellow ochre onto tracing paper. That was used to transfer the water lily image I'd earlier sized to fit the gesso panel. Now I'm scumbling and glazing and glazing...

  1. ooh! This already has life... feels like what one might see while out on an early morning paddle on the lake as the mist is just beginning to rise.

  2. It does seems misty, although part of that is glare. (To the scanner today!) I am having fun with this piece and getting in lots of painting time.

  3. I was just going to comment that you are clearly having fun with this! It is a very satisfying thing to be able to create from the roots up, as you are doing. In painting terms, that is. Lovely to see the picture appearing.

  4. Thanks, Judith. I enjoy painting late into the night. Alas, tomorrow it is back to work, but not for long! :-)

  5. hi john, i've been painting all day today...did a sky on a 8'10 panel and started the wall. next i'll transfer the larger portrait of libby. i finished the study and probably put on over 100 layers. the skin did end up looking translucent. i feel now the larger one will really take form faster now that i understand her coloring and where all the half tones go. i've been thinking about going to the venice workshop...it sounds so great. i'm glad you are so diligent, john. keep in touch. dorothy

  6. Hi Dorothy! I so like that idea of a study, although the Libby study already looked great in the workshop. I am looking forward to seeing both. 100 layers. Awesome!

I did think about Venice but, for me, for now, I think it best that I work on my 10,000 hours. Maybe next fall I can get a few lessons in NH.
