Following encouragement from Dorothy on my crabapples painting, I've put in some effort the past two evenings. There's more work ahead but I'm liking where this is going.
oh john, very nice turnaround. the crabapples are getting the full attention, while the background pushes them forward in a supportive way. remember, it is never about the background...glad you got rid of the leaves etc. too distracting to the very gems you present here. nice gold frame...something old would be nice...go for real gold leaf. just got a great one on e-bay not long ago. kudos...dorothy
"It's never about the background"- aha! Such simple words, but I never really thought about it like that. Dorothy is right! I realize that in the original version of the crabapples, I was more excited about that warm background which (as we now know) pulled the attention from the fruit. But now, the little apples shine in all their gorgeous glory. Every painting is a journey, isn't it? ~ gretchen p.s. did you actually "pick" a piece of poison ivy (brave man) for your previous painting or work from a photo?

Ah, that was from photo. Back when I was more active around the lake I was beginning to realize that I needed some system to collect and protect samples until I got home. Well, the lake went mostly by the wayside when the artwork took over. Now that I have time for both, I need to put together a small backpack to kit up envelopes, bags, sketching materials, camera, and gloves.
You are almost at the point of wondering how you ever found time to go to work, if you haven't already got there! The crab apples are simply beautiful, although reading about your journey to bring them into being, simply, is the wrong word.
Thanks, Judith. Funny how I easily fell into hardly thinking of work at all, no doubt with these interests just waiting for attention. I am still adjusting to all this open space!
