The Art Experience

Today I visited my first real art store. I've been planning a side visit to DickBlick in Boston when I get back to the MFA. But  in need of a few things for next week's class, I dropped in at The Art Experience in Avon. Wow! I got most of what I needed and only splurged a bit. Being able to see and feel all those papers let me home right in on a Canson vellum bristol--a bit of tooth but still pretty smooth.

This place has all kinds of panels suitable for gesso--masonite, wood, and wood with supports. Very cool.

I'm off to try my new paper. Having hurt my back, the only place I can get comfortable is in bed with a heating pad. I'll be juggling all my stuff and hollies while keeping Timothy at bay!

  1. Art stores are like bookstores- addictive and inspiring! I always try to plan a side trip to Dick Blick when in Boston, and rarely emerge without at least one small splurge ( maybe two... OK, who are we kidding- three, maybe four... ). :-)
Sorry to hear about your back; not fun- hope you feeling better asap!

  2. Gretchen, do you know how Dick Blick's in store pricing compares with online?

Thanks for the well wishes. Today is books and pencils and the heating pad! :-)

  3. Oh my - how did that happened? I had been there a few years ago and i just hate it.

On another note, I bought a copy of Coral Guest's book on ebay. Hope to get it next week.

  4. Triangle pose. I figured yoga would help keep me in shape as I move into retirement. :-) Once I heal, I will be more careful! Moving very slowly today...

Congrats, Zarina! Hope you enjoy the book.

  5. Triangle post - I hate that. Yoga is a great way - it stretches the muscles and at the same time sweating it out without all those fancy moves. But then I just love body combat.

  6. I'm not a good judge on the pricing comparison of store vs. online @ Blick's. 99% of the time I order online/catalog as I rarely get to Boston- and when I do, I don't want to have to carry big/heavy/awkward items (i.e. papers, paints) around the city with me all day - I refuse to drive/park in Boston so am always on foot ( I take the bus down from NH or if I do drive, I park outside the city at Alewife and take the T in). So my visits to Blick are all about fun little splurges that fit in my bag.
Hope your back is feeling better!

  8. I hear you, Gretchen! I do Boston the same way. Commuter rail from Bridgewater to South Station. Red Line to get me started. Got into the habit when I had to attend work meetings and found that I really like public transportation. Train gliding through the swamps is so entertaining.
