White Pine Cone Ideas

How little information needs to be conveyed in order to recognize an object? Familiarity must play an important part.

Squinting on the first photo gives results similar to the second. Would that very little detail be enough?

Or how about an inversion? This might be a starting point for an etching...

  1. "Oh look, a 'pine-corn!' " as my friend's little girl used to say!
It is true- not a lot of info is needed to recognize an object; the Chinese Sumi-e masters knew this, the Impressionists knew this, and I have to keep reminding myself of this every time I start drawing myself into a corner by getting hung-up on detail and forgetting to step away from my page to see the whole picture. Simplify, simplify, simplify!

  2. I probably used to say the same thing myself! I was "Zon" to my siblings. :-)
